We are investing $500 million to build a better airport. Click here to find out more.
Sydney Airport's proximity to the Sydney CBD provides Sydney and NSW with a unique advantage. Being only eight kilometres from the CBD, Sydney Airport is extremely efficient in terms of travel times to and from the airport. This is important because, as a long haul destination, most passengers have already been travelling for many hours before touching down at Sydney.
To improve traffic flow and reduce congestion, the Preliminary Draft Master Plan (PDMP) proposes a new road access concept for Sydney Airport's Domestic Terminal precinct.
The existing road network servicing the two terminals comprises a single access road. That is, all vehicles driving to or from the terminals must use one road – which explains why we sometimes see peak time traffic congestion.
The PDMP proposes a new way to address this congestion problem. The new concept involves separating the different classes of traffic – such as taxis and hire cars, bus/coaches, limousines, car parkers and people meeting passengers – and then redirecting each class of traffic into a different part of the terminal area. By untangling the different streams of traffic in this way, we can reduce congestion.
The concept involves creating three entry points to the domestic terminal precinct in place of the existing single entry point.
Planning and investigations by the NSW Government have also commenced on the M4 Extension and the duplication of the M5 East. Both motorway projects – if ultimately approved – will significantly improve the road network around Sydney Airport and Port Botany.
Additional car parking will be provided in both the International and Domestic terminal Precincts to meet customer demand.
The public transport infrastructure and services now provided to access Sydney Airport need to be improved.
That's why Sydney Airport is committed to working with the NSW Government to develop improved public transport solutions.
While preparing the PDMP for public exhibition, Sydney Airport consulted key NSW Government transport and infrastructure agencies, including the Office of the Coordinator General, the Ministry of Transport, CityRail, State Transit Authority and the RTA.
The NSW Government is looking at introducing new bus services, one that would connect Sydney Airport to Miranda and another to Hurstville. These new services will add to the existing ones linking Sydney Airport to Burwood, Rockdale and Bondi Junction.
The Government's Rail Clearways Project also has the potential to substantially increase capacity on the airport rail line as well as the reliability of trains that use that line.
