Environment

The Sydney Airport team is very conscious of the unique and privileged position it has so close to the heart of a vibrant, growing city. We recognise that along with the undoubted advantages this brings, Sydney Airport has a number of commitments, in particular, environmental responsibilities.  

Noise

Much work has been done by the aviation industry over the past decades to address aircraft noise. At Sydney, major measures and controls include noise sharing flight paths, acoustic insulation, a movement cap and a curfew.   Issues to do with aircraft in flight, taxiing, taking off and landing are managed by the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government and AirServices Australia, and not Sydney Airports Corporation Limited. Sydney Airport Corporation Limited does, however, manage noise from the ground-running of aircraft. Noise impacts from ground-running are managed through Sydney Airport's Aircraft Engine Ground Running Rules.  

On-Airport Environmental Management

The primary environmental legislation that applies to environmental management at Sydney Airport itself is the Airports (Environment Protection) Regulations (1997).   Sydney Airport has developed a five-year Environment Strategy (2005 - 2010). The Strategy outlines management plans for specific environmental issues, and contains individual actions designed to improve the overall environmental management of our operations.
